The beginning of a new school year is just around the corner. As parents and caregivers, we want to ensure our kids are well-prepared for the exciting journey.
For the most part, schools should aim to equip our kids for adult success and spark awe for discovering and creating new things around them.
Hence, to help our young learners start the school year on the right foot, I’ve put together six practical and effective ways to prepare them and themselves for the upcoming academic adventure. It is more about creating a rhythm and safe environment to cultivate lifelong learning.
1. Morning Routine – Start Your Day Right!
First, establishing a solid morning routine is crucial in setting a positive tone for the day. Encourage your kids to wake up a bit earlier, allowing ample time to get ready without rushing. A nutritious breakfast is essential for fueling their bodies and minds. Opt for whole grains, proteins, and fruits to give them the energy they need to conquer the day.
Also, take into account the power of getting dressed. Wearing their favorite outfit can boost their confidence and prepare them for whatever challenges lie ahead. Now I believe this means something other than dressing up fancy but figuring out the clothes that allow them to be the most productive!
2. Evening Routine – Wind Down and Rest Up
Just like a morning routine is vital, a peaceful evening routine ensures your kids get a good night’s sleep. Create a calming atmosphere before bedtime by engaging in relaxing activities. Reading a bedtime story together or practicing deep breathing exercises can help them unwind and ease into sleep.
Especially prioritize getting enough sleep each night to ensure they wake up refreshed and ready to learn.
Nevertheless, some nights it takes work to get the kids to bed on time or to go through the entire rhythm of the ideal evening routine.
With this in mind, try to have 3 things you always do. Change into jammies, brush teeth, and give good night hugs. It is essential to go with the flow and try to keep things peaceful when things are not the ideal. I have found when the evening doesn’t go my way, and I am fretful about it, the entire household suffers, and the next day is rough.
Please tell me I am not the only one who struggles consistently to keep the ideal routine!
Structure with breathing room is key!
3. Learning Goals – Set the Stage for Success
Sit down with your kids and help them set achievable learning goals for the school year. Encourage them to dream big and aim high in their academic pursuits.
Let them see how their academic learning can connect beyond the school setting. Also, help them develop some goals outside of school. You can do this by assisting them to set goals related to their extracurriculars or hobbies.
Give support by helping them break down these goals into smaller, manageable steps so they can track their progress and stay motivated.
As they journey along, be their biggest cheerleader and support them throughout their learning journey.
As well as that you will also want to set goals for your child. Once you know where the learning gaps are, you will want to create a plan to help your child make progress. It is important to set SMART goals and do a bit of practice each day. One way to help the most is sitting down with your child and giving explicit helpful feedback so they are not practicing incorrectly.
4. Curiosity for Learning – Embrace the Wonder of Learning
In the same way, foster a sense of curiosity and wonder in your kids’ educational journey. Explore new subjects, visit museums, science centers, and encourage their questions. Curiosity sparks a love for learning and makes the educational experience enjoyable and engaging. To get more writing in, have your child keep an adventure journal to record their thoughts and ideas.
In this blog, I share ways to cultivate a love for learning!
5. Not Comparing Children – Every Journey is Unique
As parents, it’s natural to compare our children to others, but every child’s journey is unique. Avoid the comparison trap and focus on your child’s individual growth and progress. Remember to set goals and practice with your child. Learn and discover the best way of closing the gaps.
Be shy of quick fixes.
I believe in big gains and that there is the best way to teach reading. BUT we are teaching humans, and each child has goals, strengths, and weaknesses. It takes applying best practices and the ability to scaffold or adjust to a reader’s needs for them to take off.
Never be ashamed to reach out and ask questions. If something needs to be fixed, try something new.
However,
At the same time, Remember to celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, and encourage them to be their best version.
I think about what James Clear teaches adults. The effect of 1% better in the little things can result in significant gains in the future.
I picture that as I help equip students to become lifelong learners. I aim to get them to perform well at school and develop the habits and attitudes to help them succeed.
6. Time for Learning & Play – Balancing Work and Play
Striking a balance between learning and play is essential for a well-rounded education. Create a schedule that includes dedicated time for explicit learning and allows room for learning through play. Learning can happen in various settings, from the classroom to the playground, so let them explore and discover through play.
Furthermore, I enjoy the Charlotte Mason Method because it encourages having time to develop hobbies and skills like playing instruments, baking, whitling, and others. In addition to studious indoor work, she encourages kids to be outside, play, and discover the world around them.
7. Free Time & Social Time – Unwind and Connect
Allow your kids to enjoy their free time independently pursuing their hobbies and interests. Whether drawing, playing an instrument, or building with LEGO, please give them the freedom to express their creativity. Additionally, make time for socializing with family and friends, as building meaningful connections is vital for their emotional well-being.
Conclusion
Preparing your kids for success is paramount as the new school year approaches. These six practical ways will help ensure they have a smooth and enjoyable academic journey. By establishing routines, setting goals, nurturing curiosity, and encouraging play and social time, you’re laying the foundation for their growth and development. Embrace this exciting time together as a family, and support your little ones as they embark on a new chapter of learning and growth. Happy back-to-school preparations!
