Finding out your child has Dyslexia or showing signs of Dyslexia can be overwhelming and heartbreaking. It is so hard to get a diagnosis because you don’t know what the outcome will mean.

Every child’s (individual’s) experience with Dyslexia is different. Some kids do well with one approach, while another doesn’t.  Navigating through all the information and knowing what works and what is true can take time and effort.

The Science of Reading – Online Dyslexia Tutor

We tend to think any thing labeled “The Science of Reading” means the answer is clear and and all students will make equal gains. I mean, it has been proven by research…right?

I love the Science of Reading and the research being shared about the effective ways of teaching kids to read.  Through my studies, I have become a stronger reader myself.

Also, I think back to some of my health issues. Everyone had the answer when researching and trying different things, and it was backed by research. Many things I found didn’t work, and some made things worse.

Does this mean that these places were schemes and taking advantage of me? That isn’t the case. It worked for others, but they over-exaggerated the results and treated everyone equally.

Here is the thing: even though we can learn a lot through research, there is no blanket answer to how we get all students to be efficient readers.

Sometimes, it may feel like we are herding kids through the school system.  A system that has all kids studying and progressing toward one standard.  Many schools have set curriculum and aren’t always able to deviate.  This can cause some students to not progress as well as their peers.

Every child should have the opportunity to learn to read well, and a grade shouldn’t determine when we stop working on developing those skills.

I know 7th graders and adults who cannot read well, which makes me sad. We should continue to develop reading skills no matter the child’s age. When we know about the brain’s plasticity and how pathways can be created, we can learn new things.

The important thing is that we can always learn and grow if we take the proper steps in the right direction.

We shouldn’t compare test scores to others, but we should look at the person and help set goals to help them progress and become lifelong learners.

Even though the schools are doing their best to meet the needs of their students and help them learn the skills they need, schools cannot always do this. There are many  reasons for this, but today, I want to share the benefits of finding a Dyslexia Tutor to help your child learn to read and meet their academic goals.

A well-trained dyslexia tutor can help identify the most pressing need for your child and develop a plan that will equip your child to make the most progress.

A good tutor can work on multiple skills during one lesson and knows how to push your child to high achievement without exasperating them.

We cannot provide a specific time frame for your child to be reading. Still, we can ensure that your child will develop the skills needed and not be stuck at a certain level. The tutor will continue to expose the child to more complex material while reviewing past information.

Through my years of tutoring, I expose kids more to the English Code while still having them practice reading; It is the key to them accelerating to the next level.

When looking for a dyslexia tutor, you will want to find someone who will keep your child at the forefront of their teaching, not a particular program or approach. Over the years, I have found that different students have different needs, and my job is to help them achieve their learning goals by providing lessons that meet their needs.

An Online Dyslexia Tutor that is Always Learning:

There is so much research and different approaches to teaching and helping students with Dyslexia become strong readers and meet their academic goals. I have been thankful to learn about the Logic of English, Structured Linguistic Literacy (Speech-to-print), and structured literacy Orton-Gillingham. And other approaches to teaching writing, vocabulary, and morphology.

As a struggling reader, I have learned and been trained in some of these approaches, which have allowed me to improve as a reader and writer. I have been able to glean things from all of this.

As a result, it has made me realize it is not an all-or-nothing approach, but more of what is needed when a student starts to struggle or plateaus. I have some thoughts, but that is for another blog.

You want to find a constantly learning tutor who will provide the best instruction for your child!

I was surprised when I read an article from Reading Rocket stating that Orton-Gilliaham differs from the Gold Standard approach. I found it an interesting read.

This shows why it is crucial to find a Dyslexia Tutor who is constantly learning, who can weed through the information, and see what works best for your child.

Flexibility:

As you look for a Dyslexia Tutor, you will want to find a flexible tutor during the lessons and be able to pivot easily to keep your child engaged and learning. You also want to find a tutor who can push their students just enough to make the most progress.

Most Pressing Need:

I have been Trained by Marnie Ginsberg over at Reading Simplified. One takeaway from her training was identifying the child’s most pressing need. She explains that when we focus on the most pressing need, other things can come together more efficiently for the student.

This doesn’t mean the tutor teaches until mastery or in isolation, but it means that they are aware of the most pressing need.

Experience with ADHD and other learning differences:

Many students who are diagnosed with Dyslexia also have ADHD or other learning differences. This is why you must find a tutor to adapt to your child’s needs.

We want to find someone who can adapt and meet your child’s needs while also helping them gain the skills needed to mature and grow.

When we look at the entire child and help them develop their reading skills, we can also help them develop the skills needed to be lifelong learners.

Builds Confidence:

Finding the right Dyslexia tutor can help kids build confidence and become more intrigued about learning to read.

A tutor can help students realize that learning to read and write is not just a skill needed to do well in school, but allows the learner to reach their potential.

When an individualized plan is developed for a child to help them learn the skills needed to become an efficient reader, we can help pique student’s interest.
