Helping Students Prepare for Middle School

As a parent, your primary goal is to see your child excel academically and enjoy their learning journey. However, you might be grappling with the challenges of helping your 5th grader navigate a complex curriculum and overcome learning obstacles, especially in reading. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about how to support your child’s educational needs, rest assured you’re not alone. Fortunately, online tutoring has emerged as a valuable resource, helping struggling students and providing a profound sense of relief to parents like you. Now, you can find comfort in knowing that your child’s educational needs are improving with personalized attention and tailored instruction.

Kate’s 5th Grade Tutoring Online Experience

Kate is a young girl who started online tutoring with me at the beginning of the school year. She has dyslexia and expressive and receptive language disorders. Kate’s mom had tried many things, but Kate was taking off with her reading, causing her to lose confidence and feel like she would never figure out how to read.

Mom came across EBLI, a speech-to-print program that helps close the reading gap and allows kids to grow their reading abilities. Mom liked the idea of finding an EBLI tutor to help her daughter improve her reading skills, so she contacted me.

Kate started tutoring with me in mid-August. After just a few weeks of lessons, Mom noticed that Kate’s confidence had risen, and she was more self-correcting.

Within a month, Kate was eager to read the cards during family game night. Not long before that, she would highly rely on someone else to read and not even attempt it.

Kate’s Mom Starts Seeing Changes

Our tutoring sessions continued. The mom would send an email about how proud she was of Kate because she had written a paper. She read it out loud to her CC group during the co-op. Participating like this was a first!

She sent a picture showing Kate reading for fun! These were all monum tal moments.

There are still some gaps in Kate’s learning, but how she has grown. She is no longer intimidated by the long words. She is noticing her stakes. She is getting better at not guessing. Also, she is standing proud because she is seeing her growth!

Seeing the gains is why 5th-grade tutoring online is so important. It allows the tutor to discover the learning gaps and help the learner develop the needed skills. Also, having a personal tutor will enable lessons to be engaging and individualized to meet the child’s needs. Sometimes, we can expect more and push. Sometimes, the child needs more accessible lessons to review the skills. Sometimes, both are necessary for the lesson.

I am so excited that Kate is developing the skills to become a strong reader. With proper guidance, she can use these skills to help her succeed in middle and high school.

Every child can improve their reading skills.

Pete’s 5th Grade Tutoring Online Experience

Pete started 5th Grade Tutoring Online midway through the school year. I tutored his younger sister in mid-October because she was in second-grade reading at a kindergarten level. She was in kindergarten during COVID, which highly impacted her performance.

Mom noticed the significant gains her child was making. Sister started out struggling with reading words like stop, and then shortly after our sessions, she was reading words like outrageous with ease.

Even though Pete scored well on his report card and was said to be at reading level, Mom noticed some concerning things. First, he would misread words or skip them altogether. Pete did not know how to stop and figure out the word. Sometimes, the words he said changed the entire meaning of the text. She also saw that he was struggling with spelling. He would spell the words correctly on the test; however, the next time he used the word in a text, it was misspelled.

His mom knew middle school would be more rigorous, and she wanted him equipped with the writing and reading skills to pursue whichever career path he chose.

Helping Develop Good Reading Skills

Pete and I started working together; Mom began noticing that he was reading more and applying some of the skills he was learning during tutoring to his schoolwork.

He also learned how to slow down and figure out unfamiliar words through tutoring.

Pete makes me laugh because sometimes he will read an unfamiliar word and say it is nonsense or not real. I had to teach him that there are a lot of words he doesn’t know, so he has to be curious about words.

I encourage him to slow down and determine what unknown words mean and how to enunciate them correctly. We apply what we know about letter patterns and their sound. We will also look it up and see how to say it correctly. We will also work on breaking the word into chunks and then sound.

Teaching 5th graders how to be engaged in their reading and making sure they apply the skills will help them build the habits needed to be good readers and not just score well at school.

Pete’s 5th grade tutoring online allows him to improve his performance at school and develop the skills needed to complete more complicated reading and writing in the upper grades.
